TREDC Visits Biochar Facility

As part of TREDC’s commitment to exploring sustainable economic development opportunities, the Board and management team recently toured a biochar production facility in Delano, California. The tour was led by Mayo P. Ryan, the CEO and founder of Sitos Group who also sits on the Board of the American Biochar Institute and is Chair of the U.S. Biochar Coalition.
Biochar is a carbon-rich material created by heating organic materials such as wood waste, agricultural byproducts, and other biomass in a low-oxygen environment. The resulting product can be used to improve soil health, increase water retention, reduce erosion, and capture carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.

During the tour, attendees learned about the production process, potential applications for biochar, and the growing demand for sustainable products and environmental solutions. The visit provided valuable insight into how these new innovative technologies can support both economic development and environmental stewardship.
For TREDC, the tour represented more than simply learning about a new industry. It was part of a broader effort by the Board and management team to explore a variety of business opportunities that align with the Tribe’s values while creating long-term economic benefits for the community.

The biochar facility tour is one example of the proactive approach TREDC is taking as it works to diversify economic opportunities and build a stronger future for the Tule River community.
